Mt. Laurel Township is located in the eastern section of Burlington County, New Jersey. Mount Laurel’s population is 41,864 and its geographic area is around 22 square miles. Mount Laurel served an important historical role in the 1975 New Jersey Supreme Court case Southern Burlington County N.A.A.C.P. v. Mount Laurel Township. That case led to “the Mount Laurel doctrine,” which requires NJ municipalities to provide minority and low-income families with affordable housing opportunities when establishing and enforcing zoning laws.
Major roads in Mt. Laurel include the New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 295, Route 37, and Route 73. The NJ Turnpike runs through Mount Laurel for approximately 7.5 miles and connects the township to both Cherry Hill and Westhampton.
